WHAT WE DO.....
Our Kids First programming is built on the core components: Tutoring & Mentoring, Common Core Standards, Service Learning, Arts Education, Leadership Development, and Parent & Family Engagement. Our programming allows for small group community building and individual exploration. Weekly theme units with state academic standards and individual student assessments to shape lesson plans during the academic enrichment component. In addition, to the regular school year, we supplement summer camp schedules with academically enriching activities to help prevent summer learning loss and equip youth with new skills and knowledge before they head back to school.
Our after school and summer programs offers skill building activities in language arts, math and reading for our students aged 5 – 12 by. Students are separated into classrooms by grade and engage in activities that are meant to expand on what they are learning in school to help them better understand and retain the concepts. On average we spend 450 minutes per week on these activities.
Our program has evolved through our efforts to find new ways to engage our students and increase learning. We recognize the importance of enrichment activities which expand on students' learning in ways that differ from the methods used during the school day and are often interactive and project-focused. Studies have shown that they enhance a student's education by bringing new concepts to light or by using old concepts in new ways and that they allow the participants to apply knowledge and skills stressed in school to real-life experiences.
Our program’s priorities are to address the needs of the underserved Outer Mission community and provide the best quality program we can for our students. Though we cater to this specific community we have no eligibility requirements and open our doors to any family in the Bay Area in need of an after school program. We also partner with several other organizations that contribute to the quality of our programming. Citywide Tutorial provides us with certified teachers and tutors that provide one-on-one tutoring for our students and specialized tutors in math who focus on pre-Algebra and Chemistry. We also receive volunteers from, MYEEP, San Francisco State University and UCSF who help us with individualized help for students. In addition, we also plan to contract with local organizations like the Excelsior Science Workshop and Performing Arts Workshop to offer our students cultural enrichment activities that we are not currently able provide. Contracting with these organizations and utilizing their expertise will help us expand this area of our program and give our students the best quality cultural enrichment experience.
